Join the bird-counting in Brittany this weekend

This last weekend in January sees the annual bird count where people all over the region are asked to spend one hour observing birds in their gardens/elsewhere and record the result on a special form, which you then send in to be incorporated in the overall results.

SPRING BREAK - 2 days in the Forest of Brocéliande, April 23/4.
This trip is going ahead, but it is essential that I have numbers (firm commitment please!)by Monday next week (23rd) at the latest. We'll be staying one night in a hotel/B&B, and do walks and visits by car to places of Arthurian interest and great natural beauty.
Total cost of trip will be €80-100, depending on accommodation, which depends on numbers. Also need to know if single, double or twin rooms required. Please email or phone asap.

Walk on Tuesday 17th

We have a walk on Tuesday 17th of January at the forest of Coatloch near Scaer. Start is at 2pm from the parking on the road near the Maison Forestière.
From Scaer, take the D4 (direction Bannalec) and after about 2km look for sign on the right to Foret Coatloch. Turn off here and then right soon after to reach the edge of the forest. Here take (to the right) the narrow straight road running through the centre of the forest (signed Halte de Coatloch) - the parking is by the side of this road after about 1.3km.
This is a pleasant forest walk with no particular difficulties, although it will be muddy in places after wet weather. All welcome.

Lesley would like to thank everyone who has sent messages and cards to Derek. She relays them all to him and he is fully aware that we are are thinking of him and wishing him well. Lesley herself also appreciates the support of many friends in the last fortnight.

Next Study Day

The next Study Day is on Monday February 6th with the theme Brittany: Coast and Islands. We'll be looking at all aspects of Brittany's amazing coastline and many islands, including things to see and do on days out, and how the littoral has been significant in the region's past.
The event will run from 11-5pm again at L'Autre Rive café/bookshop in Huelgoat where hot and cold drinks and food are available all day. Cost 20€, or 18€ if paid before January 23rd. Full details will shortly be on our website (link opposite).

Spring Break - Foret de Brocéliande

BWs is hoping to organise a two day break to the magnificent Foret de Brocéliande - wonderful walking and land of Arthurian legends (allegedly) - near Rennes in April, Mon 23/Tuesday 24.
We will walk in the forest (Valley of No Return and Fountain of Eternal Youth, for example!)and visit other main sights by car. The trip will be fully guided but information will also be provided for those wishing to do their own thing for some of the time.
We will stay one night in a hotel/B&B - for this reason BWs needs to know soon how many people are interested. The cost of dinner on that night and breakfast on the following morning will also be calculated in the cost of the break. The two lunches will be at participants' own charge.
The aim is to keep the price of accommodation, meals as stated, maps, information and guiding under €100pp.
Please email BWs asap saying how many people, if requiring single room, shared room, room with double bed, room with twin beds, etc. Also indicate if you are prepared to drive or would like to car-share with someone else. All these things will decide the viability of the trip!

We had a good walk in the forest at Huelgoat today, in perfect weather conditions. Afterwards we enjoyed Phil and Rosie's kind hospitality, with mulled wine, mince pies and cake. Many thanks to them and everyone who turned out for a bit of fresh air after all the festivities.

We have a walk on Boxing Day this year, that is Monday 26th December, to work off some of that indulgent eating and sitting about doing nothing! The venue is Huelgoat, meeting for a 2pm start in the large forest parking area just outside the town (direction Poullaouen)on the D769. (From the town, it is on the left shortly after a bridge with a sharp right bend. From the other direction it is just after signs and parking for the Goufre, on the right.)
The route is not too demanding, and there will be an option to return to the car-park on a single easy path if you want to cut the walk short. Optional apres-walk - after the walk we are all kindly invited to the House of the Menhir just outside Huelgoat for refreshments.

Xmas Day walking

For those who are alone at Xmas and would maybe like to combine a walk with being 'around' other people if not actually with them, BWs has thse suggestions. The Chateau of Trévarez (near Chateauneuf-du-Faou) with its magnificent gardens is open on Christmas Day. You pay an entrance fee but then have acres of varied grounds (pictured above) to explore (the wilder bit is off to the left on approach to the chateau) and also a café and shop for a bit of social contact.
The forest of Huelgoat has numerous options for walking. For a change from the famous Chaos area, follow the canal out to the old mine, or stroll down the Argent river from the Gouffre. The café/bookshop L'Autre Rive (signed off the D769 on the left when leaving the town) with its warm ambience (and great hot chocolate) is open on the 25th, hot food and drinks available all day.
Finally Quimper is always a good place to be alone among people, and you'll be able to find a friendly bar open - try the Café des Arts on the quay by the Prefecture. It's the kind of place you can sit for hours, after enjoying a climb up Mont Frugy behind the tourist office or a gentle stroll along the Odet to picturesque Locmaria.
If none of those ideas appeal, join BWs on Boxing Day for a short or medium length walk at Huelgoat (2pm). Details here next week.

Walking in the sun, just walking in the sun ...

Amazingly we enjoyed a fine, dry walk today at Locmaria-Berrien, despite sitting in cars at 1.50 watching the rain. By 2pm the sun was out and not another drop fell until soon after our return. By that time we were ensconced in the café L'Autre Rive drinking coffee and hot chocolate (with cognac in some cases...). Congratulations to our well-behaved dog companions, including newcome Bentley and his equally well-behaved owner Chris.
Thanks to all, it was a great afternoon.

We have a walk on Tuesday afternoon, starting from the car-park by the church in Locmaria-Berrien at 2pm. This is an attractive route of medium length, covering a Green Way, rural tracks and quiet hamlets. In the event of the weather being awful, we'll go to the forest café at Huelgoat for hot chocolate and maybe a short walk in the wood after. All welcome.

An all-weather walk/day out suggestion

For an autumn or winter day out, BWs recommends a visit to the town of Guingamp. Not only is it a particularly attractive little place with good shops, many medieval buildings and an interesting church (famous 'Black Madonna'), but there is also a 7.5km circuit for a walk including the town centre, a pretty riverside path, and a lofty chapel with good views. There should be no problems with the paths at less salubrious times of year.
And if you want to combine walking, shopping and admiring gorgeous architecture with a good meal, book ahead for a real fine dining treat at La Boissière (www.restaurant-la-boissière.com) or enjoy a quality crepe or two at Creperie St-Yves in rue St-Yves or Creperie du Roy near the tourist office. (The TO is closed on Mon, Wed, Sun.)
Make a day of it where the weather is unlikely to spoil things. Sports' fans could maybe plan a visit to watch the giant-killing Guingamp football team!

Many events are taking place this weekend for the huge annual Telethon charity fund raising extravaganza. Why not walk in a good cause? At Poullaouen on Sunday (20th) you can choose circuits of varying distances between 6 and 12kms. Register at the salle polyvalante any time after 8.30am.

Walking the Nantes-Brest canal - update for 2012

The Red Dog Books guide to the Nantes-Brest canal first came out in 2007, and has been very well-received, proving popular with walkers and cyclists alike. It gives maps of the entire 365kms with details of what to see, where to stay and places to buy provisions. The introduction also covers the history of the canal and its construction.
This guide is now in the process of being updated for a new issue in 2012, when it will appear in a bi-lingual English/French form - the result of so many French people asking for a guide of this handy spiral-bound format in their own language.
Autumn and Winter walkers should make the canal towpath a prime target, as it offers easy going on made paths which do not get too muddy, although some stretches (in Finistere in particular) are occasionally underwater after very wet weather. Recommended areas for beautiful and varied scenery are the Foret de Branguily near Pontivy, from Plelauff to Bonen in Cotes d'Armor and from Chateauneuf-du-Faou to Pont Coblant in Finistere.

Legends Course bargain ...

Only two more days to get a reduced rate (18€ instead of 20€) for the Legends of Brittany one day course on November 16th. It will be held at L'Autre Rive café/bookshop (pictured) on the edge of the forest at Huelgoat. There'll be a short optional walk at lunch time, weather permitting, but the bar is open all day for the less energetic! We do not have a walk in November this year, only a Day Course on Breton Legends on Nov 16, which will include an optional short walk in the forest at Huelgoat, where the event is held.
So the next walk is in December, on the 6th, at Locmaria-Berrien (a different walk from last year's one located there). More details nearer the time. There will also be a walk on Boxing Day.

Walkers and other animals

We had a lovely walk at Carhaix today, with dry weather, perfect temperature, great scenery and ancient buildings galore. There was also a large variety of two and four-footed animals waiting to enliven our route along the way, from geese to goats, and gorgeous horses to a glamorous kingfisher on the river Hyères.

The weather was very kind to us for yesterday's outing, with only a few spots of rain whilst we were travelling from one 'extreme' to another, and even a little sunshine. We sampled local delicacy the Molène sausage in a wonderful restaurant in St-Renan (La Maison d'Autrefois) before visiting the tallest menhir in France and then the very edge of France at the Pointe de Corsen. After a drive through the beautiful old fishing port of Le Conquet, we ended up at the Pointe St-Mathieu to see the ruined abbey on the cliffs, including an ancient fire-tower from pre-lighthouse days. It was a great trip and many thanks to all who participated.

Going to extremes - Tues, 4 October

We have an excursion (in cars) on Tuesday, 4th October, to see some fabulous and extreme sights: the tallest menhir in France, the westernmost point of France, etc. Meet in the centre of St-Renan (NW of Brest), Place du Vieux Marché 11.45-12 noon for a quick lunch (probably creperie).
If this weather holds, it'll be perfect for a trip to one of the best coastlines in Brittany.

Looking ahead - spring break

Brittany Walks hopes to organise a spring break (1/2 nights) in the magical Foret de Paimpont (claimed by some to be the Brocéliande of Arthurian legend). Apart from Merlin's tomb, the lake under which Lancelot grew up and the Valley of No Return, there is much stunning walking in the forest, numerous megaliths and many other interesting things to see. The area is situated in Ille-et-Vilaine, NW of Rennes. The programme will depend on numbers, and may combine group walks with time for individual exploration. April is the probable month.

First most of us ate fresh fish in the harbour area, then some of us visited the sardine shop, then we all walked through the beautiful Plomarc'h area with its rare breeds farm, old cottages and huge Roman factory remains, then we were all glad to sit down for a drink and most of us had coffee, but ...

Douarnenez - Tuesday September 20th

On Tuesday, September 20th we have a stroll around Douarnenez and the quiet rural paths of the Plomarc'h. Spectacular sea views and easy walking on pavement/surfaced paths throughout. This is a town with a remarkable history and much of interest to see, including one of the most important Roman remains in Brittany.
We meet on the quay by the boat museum at Port Rhu (just down the hill behind the tourist office, via rue de Port Rhu, where there is a useful car-park) for a 2pm start. At last I am able to say it - Look forward to seeing you all there!

Our walk on Tuesday 6th September starts at 2pm from the parking for the megalithic alignments on the D781 just outside the village of Erdeven (east of Lorient). This is a very attractive and easy-going walk, taking in many exceptional neolithic remains on various sites. Suitable for everyone, without any particular diffculties. Hope we can enjoy some September sunshine along the way!

The weather was kind for an enjoyable walk around Chateaulin and the Aulne river yesterday afternoon. Thanks to Harold for taking the group in my continued absence, and to everyone who came along. Thanks to Chris and Barry for the photo.

Our next walk on September 6th is a fabulous megaliths trail from Erdeven in Morbihan: easy route and a stunning variety of neolithic monuments all along the way.

Chateaulin walk

We have a walk next Tuesday (23rd) in Chateaulin, starting from the Tourist Office (on the quay across the river if approaching from the east) at 2pm. This is an easy walk of 5-6kms, covering some interesting aspects and views of the town as well as a stretch of very pretty riverside walking along the Aulne, and a lock with underground viewing chamber. Bring your visitors along!

Monts d'Arrée walk - Tuesday 9th August

We have a new and very interesting walk in the Monts d'Arrée on Tuesday, August 9th. This involves a little used track along the heights with fabulous views to the peaks above Le Relec, and then a site of WWII significance.
Meet at the Col de Tredudon on the D36 short-cut over the shoulder of the hills before the TV mast off the main Carhaix/Morlaix route D764 (do not go as far as the roundabout). On the top of the rise there is parking on either side of the road.
Let's hope for a sunny day! The walk starts at 2pm.

The location was fantastic, but heavy rain prevented the scenic picnic (thank you Denise for a nice dry house to eat in!) and in the afternoon we opted for a visit to Taden manoir and then the port at Dinan, where the weather improved. The energetic strode up the cobbled streets to the famous town, whilst others visited the Maison de la Rance to get a well-presented overview of what we'd missed. We all enjoyed the après-non-walk overlooking the river. Thanks to Lesley for our revised programme, and definitely whetting our appetites for the Rance nature walk at another time.

Hot dogs and great cake!

We had a lovely walk from Parcou today, led by Alice and Eric Murphy who have a B&B/gite in the hamlet (www.parcou.fr)and know all about the needs of walkers, having done the Compostella Trail themselves. We kept the route a bit shorter than that on a very warm afternoon, enjoying sun and shade along the old railway tracks that offer many options in this area. Afterwards refreshments in the pretty garden were most welcome, with Alice's delicious cake making a very brief appearance.
Many thanks to Alice and Eric, and to Dave, back on form with his camera. Tex was easily the hottest dog on the block.

SUNDAY WALK, July 3rd - 2pm

We have a walk this SUNDAY (just for a change) at 2pm, starting from the hamlet of Parcou near Plonevez-du-Faou. Alice Murphy will show us the beautiful countryside around about and then there'll be a chance for refreshments at her lovely house, which has been adapted to provide accommodation for walkers (and others), an enterprise she runs together with husband Eric. The walk is short (6kms) and easy-going on country tracks through very attractive scenery.
DIRECTIONS: from the mini-roundabout at the north end of Plonovez main street take the Lannedern road but then turn left very soon after (Parcou signed amongst other hamlets). Continue ahead for just over a kilometre and then Parcou is signed to the left.

We had a really good walk today at Chateauneuf-du-Faou, with esteemed regulars, lovely newcomers (Kathy) and a returning BWalker (Steve) from our earliest days all those years ago. The weather was dry, even if the sun didn't exactly smile on us. Thanks to everyone - great afternoon.

Walk at Chateauneuf-du-Faou, Tuesday 21st June

We have one of BWs favourite walks on Tuesday, 21st June, starting at 2pm from the parking by the bridge over the Aulne below the pretty hill town of Chateauneuf-du-Faou. This is a straightforward route along towpaths on an especially beautiful section of the Nantes-Brest canal, with a short uphill stretch on an old Roman road to allow great views of the Chateau of Trévarez. We cross the river at a lock with a pedestrian bridge. NOTE: after the recent wet weather, appropriate footwear needed!

Sunglasses and waterproof trousers

Despite wild weather swings we managed to see a wide variety of coastal scenery and cultural sites on our coastal walking holiday in the Gulf of Morbihan. Instead of a barometer we watched Sue to see if she was putting on her sunglasses or waterproof trousers. On the last day a good meal at the beautiful port of St-Goustan at Auray surprisingly won the vote against a hike in the driving rain.

We are off on the BWs annual coastal walking holiday on Tuesday. This year, our location is the Gulf of Morbihan with its many islands and easy-going shore path, and we will be spending a day on the Ile d'Arz as well as walking on the Presqu'ile de Rhuys and around the Pointe d'Arradon. And if the weather god doesn't smile on us, the beautiful city of Vannes awaits nearby.

Picnic by the lake

The weather god that so often smiles on BWs kept the rain away today for our picnic at Lac St-Michel in the Monts d'Arrée. It wasn't actually hot or sunny, but that hardly mattered given the great people, great food and great views on our little stroll along the lakeside. Thanks to everyone for their contributions (some amazing home-cooking), good-humour and good company. Brian was top of a large dog division.

Summer Picnic - June 7th

We have our summer 'social' event on Tuesday 7th June, in a very beautiful spot overlooking Lac St-Michel and the Monts d'Arrée. After a picnic, there'll be an optional short linear walk along the lakeshore. Arrive from 12 noon, picnic at 12.30.
Meeting point is the car-park for the barrage at Nestavel (access from the village of Brennilis).
From the main road D764 (Morlaix to Carhaix), turn off for Brennilis; after entering the village FOLLOW SIGNS TO THE BARRAGE AT NESTAVEL (about 1.8km). Car-park is on the left. The actual picnic place is about 300m away, so a bit of carrying will be necessary. Helpers available.
Please bring some sort of finger food to share (savoury or sweet)and a bottle. 2€ donation requested on the day.

NB: in the event of bad weather, we have an indoor venue but meeting point still at the barrage car-park.

Peace and quiet

It turned out to be a beautiful afternoon for our Walking Meditation, and what a lovely experience it was! One of the participants aptly summed it up as 'a calm warmth of quiet friendship'. Sharing the beauty of nature with others in an easy silence really is very relaxing, and we each enjoyed our own individual experience of the menhir walk and then the wonderfully atmospheric woodland route with bird-song all around us.
Thanks to everyone who came and made the event such a success, and especially to Rosie and Phil, our hosts, as generously welcoming as ever. Only shadow on the day was Lesley's absence (because of car trouble). We missed you!

Walking Meditation

The Walking Meditation is on Tuesday 24th at the House of the Menhir du Cloitre (hamlet of Cloitre near Huelgoat). Full details including directions can be found on a special page at www.brittanywalks.com
There will be two short silent walking meditations during the afternoon. Participants should arrive between 2 and 2.15pm. Written information will be provided on arrival. The purpose is to relax and focus fully on the present moment and on the motion of slow, silent walking in connection with nature.

SUNSHINE, SCENERY .... WHO COULD WISH FOR MORE

It was a small but enthusiastic group of people (& dogs) that gathered this afternoon by the church at Gouezec under a cloudless azure sky. We had a lot of uphill walking to start with, but it was worthwhile as we passed by fields & woodlands along footpaths lined with so many Foxgloves. All the time we were catching tantalizing glimpses of the views stretching out below us. Everywhere was a lush green, inspite of the dry weather.
We reached the crescendo as we climbed to the top of Carreg an tan . This is Breton for Roche du feu in French & Fire rock in english.
With her great knowlege of Breton history, Wendy described for us how, at this very spot, in the 10th centuary, a beacon was lit to send warnings about Viking raids along the Alune Valley.
We sat for a while,taking in the magnificent view as several butterflies danced in the air around us.
Finally we decended along more woodland & fieldside footpaths & returned to the car park.
Thank you Wendy, on behalf of all of us,for anothr memorable afternoon.

This is a short stroll, initially steadily uphill to a superb look-out point with wide views over Finistere, then gradually back down to the village via country lanes and quiet roads. We leave from the church at 2pm. All welcome.

What a walk!

It's hard to imagine a more beautiful or more interesting walk than this one at any time, but in such amazing weather with nature at its finest, let's call it memorable! Much of the route was shady, in woodland or by the sweetly flowing Ellé where we had a welcome rest, and even the steep stone pilgrims' path to the Chapelle Ste-Barbe seemed a well-rewarded effort on such a perfect day. The jubé at the Chapelle St-Fiacre, one of the marvels of Brittany's rich religious heritage, is certainly worth more than a few kilometres of anyone's effort.
Thanks to all who came and contributed to the experience. On the dog front, Tex wins the new BWs 'Roughed up by greyhounds but still smiling' award. Thanks, Barry :-)

Le Faouet, Tuesday 26 April

Our next walk is this Tuesday at Le Faouet, leaving at 2pm from the market hall in the main square. It's an exceptionally beautiful and interesting walk, passing the Chapelles of Ste-Barbe and St-Fiacre (with its famous rood-screen) as well as following the river Ellé. There are two climbs, a steep one up from the town on an old pilgrims' path at the beginning, and a final long gradual rise back to the town at the end, but we'll take these slowly! Otherwise the walk is quite straightforward and extremely scenic, even more so than when this picture was taken. Look forward to seeing you there.

We had a very enjoyable trip to Rennes, with good weather for exploring the medieval and neo-classical quarters. It really is an interesting and visual stunning city, although strangely quiet at this time of year when the 60,000 students are on holiday. Thanks to all who came and shared the experience.

We have a visit to Brittany's capital city Rennes next Tuesday (12th April). There will be a guided walk around the main places of interest in the morning, then free time for exploring, shopping, eating, drinking, etc. Rennes is a powerful blend of ancient and modern, with a lively street atmosphere, stunning architecture, great restaurants and plenty to see and do. There is a one-line metro system which can cut down walking between the sights. Recommendations and information will be provided on the day.
The meeting point (10.30am) is the café near the cathedral entrance. This is a short walk up the rue des Dames from the Tourist Office. Park north of the river (Place des Lices underground car-park is well signed on entering the city) or park and ride (metro) into the centre from one of the peripheral parking areas.

Red Admiral, Small Tortiseshell, Brimstone, Comma, Speckled Wood, Orange Tip. Seven species of butterfly in my garden in the past week. The first three of these need nettles on which to lay their eggs. If you can spare a place for an undisturbed nettle patch in a sunny spot in your garden, you will be helping some of nature's most beautiful little creatures & of course you will have the joy of watching them floating silently among yor flowers sipping the nectar.

We have our next walk on Tuesday, 22nd March at Pleyben, departing from the church at 2pm. This is a medium length walk of no special diffculty, mostly on rural tracks, with one section of road walking requiring care. If you are approaching Pleyben by car from the north, be aware that there may be some traffic disruption and various deviations to reach the centre, owing to major road works. Looking forward to another spring ramble!

...GOODBYE! As I warched these Brent Geese feeding in preperation for their long flight back to their northern nesting grounds, I thought of how, not very long ago, people believed that wild geese nested in the sea! Barnacles were believed to be goose eggs, & there is even a species of barnacle called a Goose Barnacle. There is also, of course, a species of goose called a Barnacle Goose. This was a logical conclusion at the time, as the last view we have of these birds at the begining of the nesting season, is when they fly off over the sea - only to return a few months later with their new families.

Hard to imagine a nicer walk than the one we enjoyed today at Glomel. It's an old Brittany Walks favourite, and rightly so. Sunny weather made the most of an interesting, scenic route with lakes, canal, reservoir and pretty country lanes. Thanks to all who came and made it a great day. Lesley's Nature Watch - Love is in the Air...

...quite literally as I witnessed this week when a pair of Goldfinches flew vertically up from a gorse bush, beak to beak & breast to breast. This image was made more bizarre by the fact that one of the birds was holding a twig in his beak. I then noticed that Magpies, Crows & Rooks everywhere are flying around with twigs in their beaks.
I just had to go to Cap Frehel, one of my favorits 'birding' spots. Already the Guillemots have started to gather, the first Kittiwakes are mewing & the Shags are nesting...see photo. Brittany is the most southerly nesting place for Guillemots & Razorbills & also boasts France's largest nesting colony, at Sept Isles, of Gannets.

Visit to Rennes in April

Our postponed visit to Rennes will take place on Tuesday April 12. There will be a guided tour in the morning and free time to enjoy the many shops, bars, churches, museums and interesting sights in the afternoon. We will be meeting at 10.30am near the cathedral. Cost 6€.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Chris and Barry on the remarkable, unprecedented achievement of arriving FIRST at the meeting point - sorry, on their 42nd wedding anniversary today. Felicitations!!!

We had a very pleasant walk in attractive scenery, mostly in good weather, including spring sunshine, tempered only by a burst of rain after the turning point where we crossed the lock over the canal. Best behaved dog prize goes to Harry ;-) Best behaved photographer - definitely Dave (thanks, mate).

Walk at Pont Triffen, Tuesday 15th February

The walk starts at 2pm from the parking by the bridge at Pont Triffen (direct exit from N164, near Landeleau). This is a fairly level and easy walk, outward on a newly developed stretch of former railway track, followed by a lock crossing over the River Aulne, and return along the canal towpath. These Daffodils have been in flower in my garden for 3 weeks, but they are the exception. I have hundreds more that are only a few inches high with tight buds. However, the signs of the approach of Spring are all around: The Catkins have dropped on the Hazel trees. The aparently naked branches on the winter trees are, on closer inspection, covered with tiny buds, some already showing green. A few weeks ago, the only birdsong was the bitter-sweet tune of a lonely Robin somewhere. Now he is joined by joyous sounds of chirpy Great Tits, melodious Blackbirds & many more. Last week I saw my first Celandine of the year.

Yes, Spring is still a distance away but, as with walking in Brittany, every step of the journey is as delightful as the final arrival.

Coastal Walking Holiday June 2011

We have our annual coastal walking holiday from 14-17th June. The location is the Gulf of Morbihan, where we will spend three nights. In addition to walking on the coastal path around the Gulf, we shall also spend a day on the Ile d'Arz. The walking level is easy, and total cost of accommodation (chalet, shared rooms) and meals will be about 150€ per person.

Tuesday January 25th How to read a Breton Church

We have a day of visiting churches on Tuesday 25th. This is the follow-up to our course How to read a Breton Church, but is open to anyone (4€, free to course members). Meet at Pleyben in salon du thé in bakery in SE corner of market square at 10.15 for coffee, depart 10.30.
Transport will be in own cars (sharing if possible), and we'll be visting several locations, with a lunch-stop, probably at Sizun. Some of us are going to eat out, but you can bring a packed lunch if preferred. Finish about 4pm.

The purpose is to identify characteristic arrangements, themes and symbols in church architecture and decoration, so that this knowledge can be applied in your own visits all over Brittany. PLEASE BRING PRINTED SHEETS FROM COURSE IF YOU CAN!

Route depends on weather, but probably along the forest canal as it seems to be everyone's favourite. I'm very sad indeed to tell Brittany Walkers that Barbara died last week. The funeral is at 1pm on Thursday, 23 December, at Grosvenor Church, Old Station Road, Barnstaple. Family flowers only, but donations to the Marie Curie fund most welcome.
Barbara was a remarkable lady, with a great store of knowledge about plants and the natural world. On our walking holiday in Le Conquet we all greatly appreciated this, as well as her quiet sense of fun and pleasure. Brittany Walks sends heartfelt good wishes to Barbara's daughter Beverly, who has joined us on several occasions in the past.

As I have just spent three days stuck in a centre for 'weather victims' in north Brittany after suffering the worst driving conditions of my life, hope everyone will understand!

These hardy Lapwings have come here for the winter to escape far worse weather in the North, so a 'Wintery Shower' of hail & sleet has little effect on them. Here, they can still find food in the fields & this is why you will see many huge flocks of Lapwings, or Peewits as they are affectionately named because of their call, feeding on farmland or reeling in flocks in the sky above. Already this winter, I've enjoyed the sight & sounds of many such flocks, one of my many favorite winter spectacles. Imagine my shock therefore, when last night on television, many eminent british bird experts lamented the loss of such flocks, over recent years, from the British countryside.

November....and beyond

We only have one walk a month from November to March, partly because weather conditions tend to deteriorate (although December has been better for walking than August in recent years) and hence places with reliable paths are harder to find. It's a good idea to make use of the Green Ways (old railway tracks and canal towpaths) in winter, as well as the coastal path, where rocky terrain is often preferable to trawling through the deep mud of rural lanes. Our walk on Tuesday, 9th November starts at 2pm from the large parking area at Ty Grean, on the main road (D785) between Pleyber-Christ and Plouneour-Menez. There's a well-signed café/bar there. It's a very pleasant rural route, mostly very easy, but be prepared for mud in places after rainy weather. Some uphill stretches, but nothing too strenous, and not too long (about 7kms). Look forward to seeing you there!

Huelgoat walk

We have a walk at 2pm on Tuesday 26th October in Huelgoat. This is mostly a new route (unless you are a very old-time Brittany Walker ;-)) and the meeting place is the large forest parking area on the left on the D769 as you leave the town in the direction of Poullaouen. Good forest paths, but one short section may be muddy in/after bad weather. The forest is spectacularly beautiful at this time of year! The après-walk will be at L'autre rive café/bookshop. All welcome.
